4/6 — Gas & fees explained like you’re five — Hands-on lab
Use MetaMask (or Rabby/Coinbase Wallet) on Sepolia so nothing real is at risk. You’ll send twice: once with a lower fee, once with a higher fee, and watch the timing and cost. Say the checks aloud: network is testnet, address is correct, fee looks normal.
Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age.
After each send, open the transaction on the explorer. Read the “gas used,” “base fee,” and “priority fee” lines. This is how you connect the wallet presets to what validators actually receive.
Steps
- Open your wallet on:Sepolia (testnet). Prepare a 0.01 testnet ETH send to a trusted address. Double-check the first/last characters.
- View the fee suggestions:(slow/market/fast). Note the estimated cost and time for each.
- Send using the slow:Option. Record the time until the explorer shows success and the fee paid.
- Send again using the:Fast option. Compare the time and fee to the slow run.
- Write a rule for:Yourself when you’re willing to wait vs when you’ll pay more. Keep it in your notes.
