Consensus Mechanisms & Collective Agreement — Part 2

#part2 – Proof of Work vs Proof of Stake

Consensus in blockchain isn’t about opinions; it’s about mechanisms.

The two most famous are Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) — different answers to the same question: who gets to write the next block of truth?

Proof of Work – Energy as Honesty

In PoW, miners compete to solve mathematical puzzles. It’s intentionally difficult — wasting energy is the point. The cost of computation acts as a shield against manipulation: to cheat the system, you’d need to outspend the entire network.

PoW made Bitcoin resilient, but not efficient. It’s like using a lighthouse to light a candle — beautiful, but wasteful.

Proof of Stake – Wealth as Weight

PoS replaced electricity with ownership.

Validators are chosen based on how many coins they “stake” as collateral. If they behave dishonestly, their stake can be burned.

It’s faster, cleaner, and scales better — but it raises a philosophical problem: if power depends on capital, have we simply rebuilt the old system with new vocabulary?

Consensus, then, isn’t just a technical question — it’s an ethical one.
